Wood Stains & Sealers Q&A

I was wondering if you could ask AFM about whether Safeseal on plywood sheathing would stop water vapor from being able to pass from the inside of the house to the outside. I'm wondering if I am going to cause walls not to be able to dry to the outside because of this product. In a nutshell, does Safeseal affect the permeability of the plywood to allow water vapor to pass through? <BR>I'm reasoning if it stops off gassing of formaldehyde (gas) that it will also stop water vapor (gas) also. Is my reasoning faulty? View answer

Hello, I have 1 gallon of the SafeCoat Polyureseal in matte and 1 gallon in satin. I will likely need to use 2 gallons for my project, 1 initial coat and then a second on top. Is it possible to mix the two gallons together and then proceed with my project, or should I use the matte first and then follow it up with the satin? View answer

I installed some wood flooring about 1.5 years ago in a rental. Used low-grade plywood that I cut into planks and installed for a rustic look. The tenants have been complaining about urethane smell - and I started looking for a solution and found you guys. However, after more thinking/research I don't think it's the oil-based urethane that's the problem but possible off gassing of formaldehyde. I already have oil-based polyurethane on the floors - so I'm not sure which product you think might work best to seal over what's there and help protect against more off gassing. View answer

Hi- I want to use one coat of your Oil Wax followed by two coats of Vermont Natural PolyWhey Floor Finish on our sanded floors. How long would you recommend letting the Oil Wax dry before applying the PolyWhey? I did a test with about 24 hours drying and it seems good, but wanted to get your input. Thanks! View answer

I've gotten interested in color washing walls. Every "recipe" I've seen so far has used latex glaze that has high vocs. Will this work as a substitute, mixed with an acrylic paint and water to color wash over an existing acrylic layer? I am looking at using Behr premium plus paint which is acrylic. View answer

I've applied an oil based poly to my wood floors. it's humid in my locale and I've had an issue with moisture in the subfloor during the summer. I was told I need to apply a breathable finish (after I take up the oil poly) and that water based poly is more permeable. Is the Monocoat breathable? Is it more vapor permeable than water based poly? View answer

I have gutted an area of my house (kitchen and one bedroom) that has some chemical off gassing and possible moisture issues. At this point, it is down to studs and a concrete slab floor. Some of the wooden framework is made with pressure-treated wood. My plan is to coat all of the studs with SafeSeal Hardcoat. But before I do, I was wondering if you have another recommendation. Hi. I read one of these answers wrong I think. I'm working on a butcher block countertop. I was planning on using this product. I already have now. But now I've decided I need to stain the countertop. Is it possible to use Rubio Monocoat 2C Oil stain on the wood and apply this on top for extra protection? TIA for your help. View answer
