Wood Stains & Sealers Q&A
Activity timeframe
working in a very old building (historic); the floor is over an old cellar style basement. Original hardwood floor was covered with 1/2" masonite underlayment. There is a distinct old smell either coming from the basement or resident in the underlayment. Could remove underlayment, but smell will definitely come through now exposed numerous old flooring joints. Considering sealing in the underlayment with a product like this. Whatever we use needs to not only penetrate, but for a layer or coating. What do you think? View answer

I am re-coating a cedar decorative furniture piece. Because of angles and size, machine prep and finish is not possible. Used to use the BioShield Primer (#1?) oil but it's not available any longer. This is unstained cedar and I do not want to darken the wood much. Thanks! View answer

We are thinking about using caramel brown rolled bamboo (Forever Bamboo or Backyard X-capes) for our fences. The manufacturer recommends applying their "specially formulated TWP [Total Wood Protector] with UV Inhibitors", but the MDS says that it is "toxic to fish" and has a maximum coating VOC of 250 grams/liter. Which product would you recommend that would be applicable to bamboo, low/zero VOC, and environmentally friendly? View answer

I just applied this product to my cedar deck and I am having trouble with the sheen. Where the sections overlapped there is a thin line of sheen that is different than the rest. Is there anything that I can do about it, it doesn't look the greatest and unfortunately while I love most everything about this product I'm wishing I had used an oil. My next question is how long will this product hold up and when it is time to treat can I apply an oil overtop of this? View answer

We used Mixwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane Satin on raw cherry hardwood flooring in one room. We've done 3 layers already. The off-gassing has been horrible! We plan to use another product in the remaining rooms. Would you recommend using this product. AFM SafeCoat, Polyureseal BP, as a 4th layer to seal it in order to prevent more off-gassing? Would 1 layer be enough? View answer

Hi, I would like to created a mixture of semi gloss and eggshell transparent/translucent glazed finish with a sponged and brushed copper and bronze finish over a deep red and or terracotta wall. I like the idea of either outright metallic pigments or more of a pearlescent finish. Do you have any suggestions for green product options? View answer

I see that to get the best natural wood look, I should use gloss for first coat and then the satin. I have your Safecoat Hardseal product in gloss. Would this be ok to use with the acrylaq? Do I even need the acrylaq or should I order the Safecoat Hardseal in satin? Its for a kitchen table. View answer
