Wood Stains & Sealers Q&A
Activity timeframe
I just bought a dining table that is stained pine. Is this the best product to use to seal and protect it so food or oils from food do not stain it and it can be easily wiped up? The person who built it recommended a polyurethane coat but I'm worried about toxic chemicals especially where we will be eating food. View answer

I am wanting to seal raw cedar to protect it from snow and rain. I am looking for a penetrating oil WITHOUT UV protection. I have been told the added UV protectants will cause the cedar to take on an orange/red coloring. I want to preserve it's natural light color. Does this product fit the bill? View answer

I believe the hard seal that I ordered from a different company that was closer to me. Let it freeze during shipping. I put it on wood items and it's cloudy and uneven. Does this mean that the product is no longer usable? I don't mind using it in a garage cabinet if it's still going to work to block off gassing and give a good seal over the cabinet. Next time, I'll buy it from you and work out the longer wait time to receive it. View answer

I own Colorado's first certified Built Green home, so you can imagine how hard I tried to get the painters I hired to use zero VOC paint. Despite my best efforts, a new employee of the company inexplicably used EXTERIOR paint on the INTERIOR of my home. !!!!! I am VERY concerned and distressed. 1) Will 2 coats of SafeSeal over the Sherwin (exterior) Superpaint help stop the off gassing of dangerous chemicals/VOCs? 2) Can I use zero VOC Sherwin Williams Promar 200 over the SafeSeal and exterior paint? I need to use that because it matches the rest of my home. View answer

I recall that you said there's no difference between Safe Seal and Hard Seal when it comes to reducing off gassing... that the only difference is the finish... did I understand that correctly? Could either be used to seal the exposed under- and back-sides of an old laminate kitchen countertop? I'm guessing the exposed parts are compressed particle board. View answer

I am looking to seal what appear to be MDF boards that have been used for the drawer bottoms and back of a new dresser against formaldehyde off-gassing. The boards have a shiny surface--only the edges are raw. I don't know whether this is a feature of MDF or whether they have been coated with acrylic. Would you recommend the SafeCoat safe seal or hard seal for this purpose? View answer

Trying to seal in smell and off gassing of a custom home made (bought second hand) bunk bed for two queen beds. We want to seal in odor and off gassing and paint it white. It was stained and has some sort of polyurethane. What product could accomplish all three? Seal in off gassing, eliminate odor, paint it white? Thank you so much for your safe products! View answer

This is what it states in regards to using Hard Seal on a furniture piece that is solid wood and particle board. Looks like someone removed from the description the 2nd NOTE which stated the product could not be used on Particle Board. Please support?Hard Seal can also be used on painted or stained woodwork or on unfinished wood products. Not for use on particle board or chipboard. View answer

Looking for a non toxic alternative to Kilz sealer for subfloor before new carpet install. Will this work? Subfloor had dog urine damage in spots, so it was sanded and bleached to resurface the subfloor before new carpet install. Installers recommended using Kilz before installation but I'm hoping for a safer product since I baby will be in the house. View answer

I am looking to use chalk paint to paint unfinished solid pine bookshelves. I was told that I need to seal the wood first so that it would not bleed through the paint. Would AFM safecoat hard seal be the best option as a primer before the paint? *Please note one of the bookshelves was painted with water based paint. Would AFM safecoat hard seal work as a primer for both the unfinished and painted surface? Thank you! View answer

Hi, there. What product would you recommend for a brand new solid wood table and solid wood chairs that are off-gassing? I thought I'd be safe with all solid wood but unfortunately they used a clear glossy sealant on the table and chairs and they are off-gassing. I tried to find out what they used but all they disclosed was that it is water-based. Thank you for your help! View answer
