I need to stain joists that I will be using to rebuild part of my deck. The boards are pressure-treated 6X10s that have been cut into four-foot lengths. All the info I can find online about preparing lumber so that stain will adhere to it recommends toxic products. Everything I read says that if you don't prepare the boards the stain won't adhere. That is a particular problem since I live at 9,000 feet in Colorado where we have bitter, snowy winters.
