Wood Stains & Sealers Q&A
Activity timeframe
I applied this product about 1 1/2 to 2 years ago on some outdoor furniture. I am ready to re-apply. The instructions make it sound like you have to sand when you re-apply. But, it sounds like, from another answer, maybe not. Is using the Rubio cleaner sufficient? Or, how does know if you need to fully sand or not? It seems pretty vague and the product instructions only say to sand if previously coated. They do not give you ANY information on the maybe/maybe not part. View answer

What is the difference between this product and Vermont Natural Coatings, Exterior, Penetrating Water Proofer other than the fact that this one is a stain too? I have 2 uses: (1) Raised bed box made out of cedar and (2) pressure treated lumber that will frame lattice. Thanks View answer

I'm trying to match an existing stain on wood that has water damage without re-staining the non-damaged areas. Can two colors be mixed to obtain a closer match? The color seems to be between Autumn Red and Acorn Brown in Vermont Natural Coatings PolyWhey, Exterior, Penetrating Stain View answer

Best guess from multiple contractors is our front porch flooring is red cedar. It is not painted and is not sealed. I scrub it annually and would like to protect it. Also, it has a beautiful, deep, rich reddish color when wet. It would be nice to see that color when dry. I don't want to track the product into the house. What product would you recommend? We recently bought a house with a wood front gate. It appears to be quarter sawn yellow pine. Whatever was used as the initial stain is now flaking off. You can rub your hand across the surface and it comes off down to the bare wood. This is the side of the gate that gets the afternoon sun. From what I have read, the PolyWhey Penetrating Exterior Stain seems to be the best choice. I have a couple of questions though. Will this stain work as stated on yellow pine? Can the stains be tinted as the Acorn Brown is not dark enough? Is there a darker color? View answer

What would you recommend to seal cedar wood on a child's outdoor playhouse? I want to keep the natural color of the cedar. A couple spots have faded sitting outside for a couple months, not sure if we should use a clear or a color that would match the cedar (if available). View answer

I painted a gourd with dyes & then coated it with an acrylic clear coat. I didn't like what I painted afterwards & painted the poly whey coat on outside to make it shiny to see if that helped. No. Other than it did its job of coating & shine. I'd love to be able to paint over it all & not waste the gourd. Can I paint with acrylic paint over the dried poly whey product? If so I plan to coat that after with the poly whey product. I like it very much! View answer

I have an oak entertainment center that I am converting to a chicken coop where it will remain outdoors. Since pets will be in close proximity I'll need a non-toxic, no-VOC, weatherproof sealer to apply to the entertainment center. I think the unit is unfinished. It measures 28x65x53 and I'll need enough to cover the inside and out. There are a lot of options for sealers on your website. Could you help me narrow it down? How many coats are necessary? For the exterior cedar floor of a catio (enclosed outdoor space for my cats), would the waterproofing or penetrating stain be a better option? I am not sure how much the cats will claw at the floor or raised sitting shelves and want to have the safest space for them. I don't expect them to shred the wood but, they will no doubt wallow on it. View answer

I need to seal a new white cement counter top. It absorbs water readily so its able to absorb liquids. Everyone I call says they have nothing that is non- toxic to help as it needs to be able to penetrate the concrete. Someone suggested this product and said we'd need to re buff ever so often.
