Wood Stains & Sealers Q&A
Activity timeframe
I'm looking to get the toxic smell out of my kitchen cabinets, which are brand new. I'm not really looking to paint them since they are white and I love the color. Which products would be best to use with this process? I'm reading about the Polyureseal (satin and gloss). I believe the cabinets made from wood. View answer

I was advised to use oil-based Rustoleum to seal indoor wicker furniture. The fumes were horrific. Two months later there is still a toxic smell. Is there a SafeCoat or other non-toxic clear sealer I can spray over the Rustoleum coat to eliminate lock in the fumes and lock in the wicker material so it doesn't deteriorate? Can your low gloss sealer be used on a colored concrete basement floor with in-floor heat? The concrete was beautiful before we finished the basement. Now it has some scratches and spray from putting in the sheetrock, etc. I can get most of the sheetrock spray off, but want to get the concrete to shine again. We built the house two years ago. I'd like to stain my refinished hardwood floor and then apply a top coat like polyurethane. I'd like a stain for colour and something to protect it that is designed for floors. I would also use this on plywood floors that have been sanded BUT IT HAS TO BE water-based, zero-VOC or low-VOC and very little odour as well, as I am very sensitive to chemicals and smells. I am trying to seal the background in a reptile vivarium without much luck in finding a suitable non-toxic sealer. I'm looking for something non-toxic, will seal grout as well as wood and will last in a humid environment (misting once daily keeping humidity above 70%). Do you have anything that will meet those requirements? View answer

I installed some wood flooring about 1.5 years ago in a rental. Used low-grade plywood that I cut into planks and installed for a rustic look. The tenants have been complaining about urethane smell - and I started looking for a solution and found you guys. However, after more thinking/research I don't think it's the oil-based urethane that's the problem but possible off gassing of formaldehyde. I already have oil-based polyurethane on the floors - so I'm not sure which product you think might work best to seal over what's there and help protect against more off gassing. View answer
