We had some work done for which molding around the floors and doors was removed (and which we don't intend to replace). The contractors suggested using hot mud on the exposed areas before priming and painting (actually plastering in our case). Is ECOS Drywall Spackle an appropriate replacement for hot mud in this situation ? View answer

My carpenters applied an oil based stain to my oak stair treads. Big mistake. It smells horrible. I did not apply oil based polyurethane yet because I realize that will smell even more! And water based polyurethanes don't work over oil based stains! Is there any healthier product I can cover my oil stained stair treads with? So far every product I see says do not apply over oil based stains. Is there any "low odor" oil based polyurethane product I can use? Or do I need to sand off the old oil stain and start again?? I believe my slate tile in my bathroom had some type of sealer on it from the manufacturer. I do not know what kind. I want to add a further sealant to seal in whatever may have been used from the manufacturer, as well as to make my slate more water resistant. Would this be a good product for that? View answer

I ordered samples of the Kahrs Avanti floor in three colors... Oak Lecco, Red Oak Nature, and Oak Pima. The Oak Pima and Red Oak Nature were both 7.88" wide, as written in the description. The width of the Oak Lecco sample is 1/2" smaller (not measuring 7.88" wide like the others). Why is this? Is this color a different width board than the others? View answer

I'm trying to replace carpeted rooms with something more kid and pet friendly. A living room, bedrooms playroom, and an office. I like Marmoleum and my husband like bamboo. It appears that marmoleum can last 100 years and still look good, while bamboo reviews put it's lifespan at 20 years and don't say anything about it's recyclability. But from a DIY installation of click tiles, which of these two will hold up better to wear, nails, spills, scrapes, etc? The rest of the house is hardwood and I don't want to replace something that's not broken but I also don't want to cut more trees to make it all match. So these two types seem the most environmental. I'm intrigued by the possibilities of this floor. Are there room scenes to give a sense of scale? As this is not a click floor, can you cut the boards to be whatever length to do a customized chevron pattern? Is there precedent in mixing the two chevron floor panels together to add zig zag color patterns? Thank you for all you do, I am new here but absolutely love your website! View answer
