I am looking for a matte finish. In two places for the AFM Safecoat, it notes that if you want a satin finish, you need to add one base coat of gloss first. But in a third place it notes the same applies for a matte finish. So, which is it? And furthermore, why is that? Seems like a lot of money to spend for a quart of Gloss that I'll barely need and will probably never come close to finishing. Thanks for your response.

Most applications of AFM Polyureseal BP require 3 coats over most wood surfaces. When you apply a matte finish over a matte finish over a matte finish, the clarity becomes slightly cloudy looking. The same holds true for a satin over satin over satin. The main reason the instructions say to use the gloss sheen for the first two coats is so that the clarity of the finish is preserved and you can easily see the wood grain through the finish without any distortion. That's it. If that is not a concern or a requirement for this application, then go ahead with three coats of the matte finish or three coats of the satin.
