Water-based sealers generally will not adhere well to oil-based finishes. We recommend sanding off the finish or using a Zinsser Bin Shellac. It's the only product we know of that will bond to the Minwax. Unfortunately, it has a high VOC content but will off-gas quickly and encapsulate the Minwax. Once dried, you can apply two coats of AFM Safecoat Acrylacq clear finish which will leave a nice, durable non-toxic coating. This coating will block any emissions from the shellac.
