AFM Safecoat Acrylacq should be tested on the surface to see if it adheres. I think it would be best to start there. If the Acrylacq bonds properly with the surface in question, you'll need 3 total coats to fully seal the cabinet. It's suggested to use Acrylacq Gloss finish for the first 2 coats, and then finish the third coat with Gloss, Matte, or Satin depending on the amount of sheen you want for the finished piece. Acrylacq will work great for sealing in smells from the off gassing of chemical preservatives or Formaldehyde that may be coming from the wood. However, if the smells your experiencing are from something like perfume, essential oils, or other organic odors this may still have limited effect.
