The seller says they are made of: "100% Natural Bamboo, Made of superior phyllostachys heterocycla (a kind of bamboo), real material, Not synthetic wood ;renewable and eco-conscious resources." They have an unpleasant smell. I can't tell if they shipped with a stain or sealer (natural looking) so don't know if the smell is from a coating or the material itself. Three coats of AFM HardSeal is recommended. This will leave a hard clear gloss finish and seal in VOCs. If the odor is not a chemical odor but from the wood itself, it may or may not seal that odor. The Safe Seal will leave a rubbery finish and should not be used for this application.
