The odor from an old pine bed could be from mold and mildew, terpene resins in the wood, or finishes/sealers that were previously applied. AFM SafeSeal was designed to block VOC emissions and odors but does now block mold nor terpenes very well. Nor can be it applied to oil-based finishes. For those, we recommend shellac (Zinsser B-I-N Waxless Shellac) as that seems to be the only product that works. Unfortunately, shellac has a high VOC emission itself because it is made with alcohol. However, it dissipates within a week or so.
