We would recommend you do wait the full cure time before putting anything/writing directly on the desktop. If you need to use the desk before it's fully cured, have a mat or pad between your computer/writing and the desk surface. Otherwise you run the risk of imprinting into the oil wax finish before it fully sets. The Oil Wax finish is a fine choice provided your butcher block desk is raw wood or sanded down to the raw wood. It does not have much in the way of abrasion resistance, however. So based on how much you scratch, scrape and otherwise beat up the surface you may need to reapply this on a fairly regular basis. On the plus side, as it is an oil, you can do spot touch-ups fairly easily.
