I just recently rented the sample box of waterproof hardwood samples and was disappointed in the surface feeling slick - not like wood. I'm wondering if this cork is the same since it�s waterproof- does that coating make it feel less like cork?

The cork does feel different than the waterproof hardwood. The only way to know how you feel about this surface would be to order the samples box and see for yourself, as everyone's opinion varies on what is slick or not slick.
