Hi there! We just installed maple butcher block countertops. We used a tung oil to stain them but want to ensure the surface is protected and would love a little shine and smoothing of the surface. What would you recommend that would be safe when in contact with food? And achieve the finish necessary to protect a countertop. Side note, our house is well lived in; 3 small children :) thank you in advance!

There are multiple requests here: shine, food safe, smoothing and ability to adhere to tung oil. Our AFM Naturals Oil Wax will bond to the tung oil stain and it is non-toxic but not "food grade" i.e. it cannot be eaten. (Our AFM Naturals Penetrating Oil is food grade.) Any of our oils will be matte when applied but can be buffed to a satin finish but not shiny. If the butcher block has not been sanded smooth, this will not make it much smoother. Shiny and smooth sounds like you want a polyurethane coating, however, that is not food grade and won't adhere to an oil stain.
