If the current finish is water-based, try samples of Polyureseal BP on them to make certain they adhere. If the finish is oil-based, we have nothing that will work for that and allow you to continue seeing the wood texture (for oil-based transitional primer and paint would be your only option)With a side caveat, if this is going over a high gloss or semi-gloss finish, you will need to lightly sand/abraid the surface before applying anything else to ensure a good bond. If this is not real wood, but a laminate, you will not be able to sand as laminates tend to be quite thin.
