The sun is the major cause of deterioration especially on Southern and Western sides of a building. Using a clear oil or a clear polyurethane will provide good moisture protection but very little protection from the UV rays of the sun. A better solution is a pigmented sealer that blocks UV rays such as our Vermont Natural Coatings PolyWhey Exterior Penetrating Stain or our Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Oil. Both are stains and sealers all in one. Darker colors will last much longer than clear ones. Both of these product perform well in direct sun. The Rubio Hybrid oil is a zero VOC oil that comes in 22 colors while the Vermont is a very low VOC water-based sealer that comes in 4 colors. Samples of all the colors are available on our website for testing.
