Most furniture that is made in third world countries don't have very high standards and utilize finishes that contain hazardous chemicals. Assuming the worst, your best option is to strip it off or sand it down and start over. Then it can be finished with our AFM Acrylacq which is a clear topical finish. Another option is to use shellac. Zinsser B-I-N clear advanced synthetic shellac will adhere and block most toxic emissions. However, be well advised, their product has a very high VOC content which dissipates in a week or so. Even though we have been looking for several decades to solve these types of problems, we have yet to find anything else that works well and is safe. If you find something, please let us know.
