As this is a stepstool, I would suggest something with abrasion resistance built in, such as AFM SafeCoat Polyureseal BP. This will also seal in chemical off-gassing from formaldehyde and other preservatives.Acrylacq is great, but is more intended for things like cabinets that are not walked on surfaces. Poly BP is designed with floors in mind.
