Mineral oils do not seal the wood and are primarily designed as maintenance products only. They do not harden like linseed oil and should only be used after the wood is firmly sealed with linseed oil. AFM SafeCoat, Naturals Oil Wax Finish is a great product for sealing wooden floors and various millwork projects but it is not meant for butcher blocks because the oils are not edible. We recommend AFM SafeCoat, Naturals Clear Penetrating Oil instead because it is made of organic oils and is harmless. Two coats, wet on wet will provide long lasting resistance to moisture. However, routine maintenance is necessary with the Mineral Oil, AFM Naturals oil or Bioshield Cutting Board Oil. Before application, the surface must be clean of any grease, oils, dust, dirt, wax, prior coatings, adhesives and other foreign materials. Because there is mineral oil already on the surface, sanding with 100-120 grit sandpaper should be used.
