My carpenters applied an oil based stain to my oak stair treads. Big mistake. It smells horrible. I did not apply oil based polyurethane yet because I realize that will smell even more! And water based polyurethanes don't work over oil based stains! Is there any healthier product I can cover my oil stained stair treads with? So far every product I see says do not apply over oil based stains. Is there any "low odor" oil based polyurethane product I can use? Or do I need to sand off the old oil stain and start again??

You will get the best results by sanding off the smelly oil-based stain and starting over. We have three products to consider after you have sanded off the smelly oil-based stain. The first is Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C Kit, which is a non-toxic oil-based stain and sealer in one step that is ready to walk on after 24 hours. The second is AFM Safecoat Durotone stain, which is water-based, followed by AFM's floor sealer, AFM Polyureseal BP.The third is Bioshield Aqua Resin Stain Finish, which is water-based, followed by Bioshield Aqua Resin Floor Finish, Clear.
