Two to three coats of Polyureseal BP will block the VOCs of most water-based lacquer finishes. However, it may take 4-5 days for it to fully cure and at that time the odor and emissions will be reduced to almost zero. It's difficult to give exact time frames for this process as there are several factors that affect dry times. Finally, you need to make sure the lacquer finish is not oil-based as AFM Polyureseal BP will not bond to it. If the lacquer is oil-based we suggest using Zinsser BIN waxless shellac first as this will adhere well and seal the VOCs. Unfortunately it has a very high (450g/l) VOC content but it dissipates within a few days time. Our AFM PolyBP or AFM Acrylacq can be applied directly over the top of the shellac.
