We have a White Oak outdoor dining table that we just finished and are struggling with how to finish it. The person who built it suggested polyurethane for spar varnish. Our concerns are weather durability for hot sun and rain, food and drink spills, And we prefer a flat finish if possible. We live in California or the sun is hot! And we don't want to stress about water rings on the table Would this be a good alternative to the options above?

We would recommend 2 coats of our Vermont Natural Coatings Exterior Penetrating Stain or 4-5 coats of AFM Polyureseal EXT for outdoor applications over freshly sanded wood. If your table has a finish on the surface, application may not adhere properly without sanding. Please test this first with a sample. Generally, clear finishes don't protect from the sun as well as pigmented products as they block UV much better and last longer.
