Zero VOC Exterior Clear Wood Sealer

Vermont Natural Coatings (VNC) Penetrating Water Proofer is a non-toxic exterior sealer for raw wood: wood siding, fences, outdoor furniture, and most other outdoor wood surfaces. It may be applied to pressure-treated wood after a minimum of 6 months. It is not suitable on wood that is submerged, sealed, painted, or below grade.

Penetrating Water Proofer is non-toxic, zero VOC and safe for people, pets and the environment. It has ultra-low odor and contains no biocides, fungicides or anti-microbial agents.

Penetrating Water Proofer is infused with juniper, which is nature’s strongest natural wood preservative. It stabilizes and seals wood from the inside which controls moisture absorption and extends the life of the wood by reducing mold, mildew and decay. Penetrating Water Proofer dries clear and leaves no topcoat, allowing the wood's color to age naturally.

NOTE: This is a penetrating water proofer. That means it works by soaking into the wood. If the wood has been previously sealed or painted, it will not soak in and will not perform as designed. Once treated, no other sealers or paint can be applied unless worn off or sanded off.

NOTE: A note on applications on horizontal surfaces such as decks. This product is clear and offers little protection from direct sun. While your deck will be waterproof, it will continue to turn grey and age like raw wood. On southern and western orientations, it will grey in 2-3 years. On northern and eastern expect 3-4 or longer.

Apply with brush, paint pad, or spray. Two coats are recommended. Apply the second coat when the first coat is still damp or before it dries. Under normal conditions treated wood will be fully cured in 48 hours. One gallon will cover approximately 300 sq. ft. depending on porosity of wood.

Why We Like It

For those with beautiful new or old woodwork outside your home, Vermont's Penetrating Water Proofer is an ideal choice for a simple, clear sealer without the smell of solvents. It blocks moisture and prevents mold, mildew and decay. Because it has no biocides, fungicides or pigments to protect it, it may need to be re-applied every two years if it's in the direct sun; it will last much longer if applied on the north or east side of your home.

If new wood, be certain surface is thoroughly cleaned before applying. For pressure washing, do not exceed 1200 psi and use a wide-spray nozzle. Allow the wood to dry completely (4-5 dry days after pressure washing). For previously coated material, be sure all loose finish is removed, then clean thoroughly. Test to ensure the wood is able to accept finish by checking if water beads on surface or soaks into the wood. If the water soaks in, the wood is able to accept Penetrating Water Proofer.

Application Instructions
APPLICATION: NOTE: Apply when no rain is expected for 24 hours.
1) Stir well prior to use.
2) Apply with a brush and/or spray equipment (if spraying use a 17-19 tip and medium to coarse spray pattern) without thinning to a properly prepared surface. Brush in any puddles of product on the surface.
3) Apply TWO coats. The second coat MUST be applied before the first coat dries. If the first coat fully dries it will not allow the second coat to penetrate. No sanding is required between coats.
4) Coat all wood surfaces and end-grain and apply in temperatures between 45° - 100°F and relative humidity of 40%-60%. Coating all surfaces increases the stability of the wood. High humidity or low temperature may lengthen dry time.
