Any time you are using a paint option in a bathroom, we recommend a semi-gloss or high-gloss so the condensation doesn't end up creating streak marks in your paint. They are also easier to clean than flat or eggshell. In regards to going over the already stained wood pieces, generally most stains are covered with a lacquer or clear coating. In order to paint or stain, you would need to sand or strip this coating off first, then either re-stain or prime and paint. We have several options available: 1) AFM Durotone stain + AFM Acrylac clear coating 2) AFM Transitional Primer + AFM Zero VOC Semi-Gloss paint 3) AFM Transitional Primer + AFM Ecolacq. This last option is a tintable lacquer that looks like paint but is more durable than semi-gloss paint. All of AFM Safecoat products are non-toxic but #1 and #3 are low VOC and #2 is zero VOC. In all three cases, what little initial odor there is all dissipates within 48 hours. I recommend you test products first before going through with your project entirely. All of these options are available in 4oz sample jars.
