Depending on your definition of "significant crack" - you can use caulk on cracks up to about 1/8-inch wide and 1/2-inch deep, but caulk alone should never be used to fill larger gaps. You will want to use a paintable caulk (like AFM SafeCoat Caulking Compound). Priming the entire wall would get the most even color for your painting afterward. As a general rule, you always want to prime before painting to get the best end result. With regards to Primer and Paint, you could either do AFM all the way (AFM Caulking Compound, AFM Transitional Primer and AFM Zero VOC Paint) or AFM Caulk followed by ECOS Paints (AFM Caulking Compound, ECOS Interior Wall Primer, ECOS Interior Wall & Ceiling Paint). The big difference between the two brands is AFM Paints are formulated to encapsulate chemical off-gassing and ECOS do not encapsulate.
