Question: What is the polypropylene backing ? doesn't that negate the no plastic concept ?
Answer: Polypropylene backing is one of the most commonly used backings for carpet because it does not stretch out and is highly durable and long lasting. And yes, it is a petroleum based product. However, if your looking for a completely pure product, then check out our Earthweave, Nature's Carpet or Kaleen Pure Life carpets and you will find no synthetic ingredients at all. We rate them a 10 on the safety scale. And don't forget the pad. We offer a 100% wool pad as well.

Answer: Call in to 1-888-727-2101 and one of our knowledgeable eco-advisors will help you get that information. They'll have to get some specifics from you (color, etc.) and then reach out to the manufacturer directly for an area rug quote.
Question: Hello, how do we clean off a turmeric spill that is wet? My child spilled a large amount of it onto the carpet. Hopefully it's not permanently damaged now :/
Answer: Turmeric is a very, very staining spice, so it's iffy. Earth Weave has this wool care/cleaning guide, https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/c... . So that may help. Also, always blot and never scrub wool carpet!!!
Question: Due to the kilim style weave, is it at all possible to use a robotic vacuum for this carpet?
Answer: They do not recommend any type of beater bar used on a loop as it can pull (for longest carpet life, your vacuum should be suction only).
Question: Is there some kind of backing so that it does not slip?
Answer: You can order the Earth Weave Rug Gripper to go under your area rug. The Earth Weave Rubber Rug Gripper is made of 100% natural rubber. It will provide extra comfort underfoot and helps prevent slipping of your rug.
Question: How do you seam this carpet together?
Question: I have a sample of UVL Troy in soft honey and it is exactly what I've been looking for BUT the wool is very very soft and I am worried that it will become fuzzy and worn looking in a short time. In reading the reviews here I see that it sheds a lot. I can deal with that. I also I would like to use my Dyson battery stick on the carpet and I wonder if the brush, which is not overly harsh and works fine on my old wool carpeting, will turn the soft loops into fuzzy lumps?
Answer: Here is the information on vacuuming directly from the Unique Carpets Ltd. site : https://www.uniquecarpetsltd.com/reso...
Question: What is the general lead time for this style? I am interested in the color 'Sizzle'. Thank you
Answer: As long as it's in stock, 1 1/2-2 weeks. Call in to 641-323-6111 and a representative will be able to check for you.
Question: This is shedding like crazy. I ended up covered in it just getting it in my home. Any suggestions how to mitigate this?
Answer: Yes, this product definitely sheds. It is 100% all-natural felted wool and is intended strictly for use as an underlay for wall to wall carpet and should be installed as such. This way, it remains always covered by the wall-to-wall carpet over top and any shedding fibers are not an issue once installed.
Question: Where are you located? I am in Ontario Canada and interested in your product thank you
Answer: We are located in Iowa. You will need to call in your order as flooring and "large things" ,as well as things ordered from our vendors direct, we aren't able to have shipped to Canada. Small things we stock may be shipped to you FedEx. But again, you'll need to call in to get those details.
Question: can you bind the edges so that it is more like a finished area rug ?
Answer: Remnants/outlets come as they are. If you are looking for an area rug, call in to 641-323-6111 and tell the person which style/color you are wanting and what size/edging, and they will be able to get a quote for you.

Question: Is is available for wall to wall?
Answer: This is wall to wall carpet, so yes.
Question: Does the back of that carpet contain Styrene Butadien?
Answer: No, it doesn't.
Question: I find the specs to not be fully informative. For example--is there Permethrin in this carpet? If so, is Permethrin really needed in a wool carpet? Is there additive/chemical in it for stain resistance? it's very hard to get a simple, full "inventory" of just what is in any carpet.
Answer: Per the Unique Carpets website https://www.uniquecarpetsltd.com/abou..., "Unique Wool Carpets use Permethrin and agents containing Permethrin as a moth resistant agent. It is not only environmentally-friendly, it is exceptionally effective and safe. Accepted world-wide and endorsed by the World Health Organization, it is also used to control insects on a variety of crops such as hops, cotton, fruit and vegetables. Permethrin is widely used in greenhouses, market gardens, and vineyards and is applied in a variety of ways.In regular use as described above, it has shown to be completely non-toxic to humans and, if ingested, passes through the system quickly and completely with no residual effects. However, when used as a moth resistant agent, Permethrin is used in much smaller quantities since it is not intended to control insects but rather as an agent that limits the ability of eggs to hatch or larvae to feed. It will not kill adult insects that walk across the carpet. There have been no reported cases worldwide of health related issues in humans from exposure to Permethrin. ".
Question: Can you cut for stair runner?
Answer: Yes, it can be made into a stair runner. You will need to call and work with an Eco Advisor to ensure that the carpet is ordered correctly. Please call (888) 727-2101 Monday- Friday 9AM-5PM CST
Question: Pile weight?
Answer: 29.49 oz face weight
Question: Can this be used on stairs?
Answer: Yes. It's perfect for any high traffic areas.
Question: Can this product be used under a large area rug? I'm looking for something that will add sound proofing and cushioning but will not off gas like the more standard synthetic under pads, and hoping this might work. Thanks for any info!
Answer: Yes, this will add some sound deadening and cushioning. Don't expect a lot as it is only 3/8" thick but it will certainly help.
Question: Hi, I am chemically sensitive and would like to find a eco-friendly carpet--such as wool perhaps. I live in Florida and there is a lot of humidity. My condo is in a flood zone and sits on a very high water table--thus more humidity coming up from the foundation. I have been told that wool carpeting would breed mold in my situation. Do you agree with that assessment? Thank you.
Answer: Wool carpeting is very good at mitigating moisture--to a limit. Excessive moisture in the air needs to be handled with dehumidification. Moisture from your subfloor below needs to be sealed properly. This is true for all types of flooring as mold can grow on virtually anything if the conditions are suitable. If your humidity in controlled between 30-65% then wool carpet would do fine. We offer many lines of wool carpet and the purest are EarthWeave, Nature's Carpet and Kaleen brands.
Question: If my room is approximately 15' x 15', how many square feet do I need to order?
Answer: This carpet is 15' wide so 15x15 = 225 SF. You should consult with your installer to make certain that is what he would need.
Question: The price quoted, does it include anything besides the carpet like pad, shipping, delivery to home?
Answer: The price on our website covers the cost of the carpet only. Shipping (in the case of carpet, this always ships freight) is quoted once you add the carpet to the cart. Certain carpets qualify for free shipping when you order above a certain amount.Carpet Pad is a separate product, with its own price, shipping, etc.I am not sure what you mean by "delivery to home" - there is freight shipping that will get it to the vicinity of your home (depending on your home's location and ease of access to a semi-truck). You may need to enlist helpers to get the carpet from the back of the freight semi into your home if it's not something your contractor/installer is ready to do. We have this handy article on what freight shipment is, and how to prepare for receiving freight. https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/A...
Question: How to clean wool carpet?
Answer: Under the downloads section on the product page we have a handy guide for maintaining Unique Carpet's wool carpet. Direct link below for your convenience:https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/c...
Question: How is it biodegradable with the polypropylene backing?
Answer: You are correct. The wool is biodegradable, the backing is not. Thanks for pointing that out.If you want 100% biodegradable, then check out Earthweave and Nature's Carpet.
Question: will the natural latex backing be safe on hardwood floors? Can it damage hardwood floor (discolor)?
Answer: You can order the Earth Weave Rug Gripper to go under your area rug. The Earth Weave Rubber Rug Gripper is made of 100% natural rubber for use on hard surfaces. It will provide extra comfort underfoot and helps prevent slipping of your rug. This pad will not stain any type of floor.
Question: Can your wool carpets be installed without padding?
Answer: It is best to have carpet professionally installed and to use carpet pad underneath it. Carpet pad increases the longevity of the carpet hugely.
Question: I have chemical sensitivity, but also allergic to most wools....I was wondering if that could be because of dyes and chemicals in clothing and oriental rugs? Do you think your wool would be different? thank you!
Answer: The only way for you to know, for sure, is to order small samples online of the carpets you are interested in and test them for yourself.
Question: Are there any other vacuums that can be used? The one recommended by Electrolux has been discontinued
Answer: You are correct, sorry for the outdated information. Unique Carpet's current recommendations for vacuum cleaners are the Sanitaire models SC888N and SC688B.To find a dealer near you, https://www.sanitairecommercial.com/p...
Question: Can I purchase in a custom size as a runner?
Answer: Yes. We sell the Earth Weave as both area rugs and wall-to-wall carpet, and can do custom rug sizing as well. If you call us with specifics on sizing and color, we can put together an estimate for you. 1-800-405-0222 M-F 9-5pm CST.https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/A...
Question: Do you no longer carry this in the blue with yellow?
Answer: We have only ever offered the same seven color combinations that you see online. As of 05/25/21 these color schemes are all still available; Cafe Florian, Cathedral Shadow, Golden Venetian, La Creme, Murano Glass, Piazza, and Terrace Sage.
Question: What are these bound with (ie outside trim)?
Answer: They have serged edges.
Question: Do these rugs shed?
Answer: All wool rugs shed for a while. It also depends on what type of vacuum cleaner you use. All manufacturers are very clear about not using vacuums with beater bars.
Question: What would be the weight in pounds of this 10' x 14' wool rug? I would have to carry it upstairs.
Answer: We would make an educated guess at around 90-100 lbs. Get some help. It's a two person job.
Question: Does this rug shed or does it have little fibers that transfer onto clothing if sat on?
Answer: It is true wool carpets shed a little. This is a factor of them being made from short "staple" fibers. In fact, all staple fiber carpets shed a little. Many synthetics carpets are made from staple fibers. Staple is really anything that is not continuous filament. The only natural fiber that is continuous filament is silk. Of course, silk would not be as durable as wool for use as a carpet fiber. In spite of the shedding that occurs with all staple carpet products, you can be assured that it is minimal and will in no way be noticeable in the appearance or durability of the carpet. You may notice small fibers in your vacuum cleaner if you were to inspect inside the collection bag. This is typical and is no cause for alarm.
Question: How do you clean these?
Answer: For vacuuming wool carpet, we recommend a vacuum cleaner operating with suction only. That means it is not also using a brush and/or beater bar. Suction-only vacuums protect the wool fibers. For spot cleaning, we recommend the WoolClean spot remover kit.For spot removal and overall cleaning of your wool carpet, we suggest Host Dry Carpet Cleaner. If you use the Host Dry Carpet Cleaner, you can rent a machine and do it yourself, or hire professionals who use the Host system. We have the instructions for using it in the "Downloads" column for all of the carpets we carry. Here is a link: https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/c....
Question: Why is the warranty only for one year?
Answer: We do not control warranties placed on a product by a manufacturer. You will need to reach out to Unique Carpets to get those answers. https://www.uniquecarpetsltd.com/cont...
Question: Why is the warranty only one year? I have seen much longer warranties on other natural wool carpets.
Answer: You'll need to contact Unique Carpet Ltd. and ask them as they make their own rules.
Question: I'm trying to find wool underlay for placement under my hardwood floor. I can't seem to find anything other than companies in the UK. Is there a reason the GBS wool underlay is only for purchase along with carpet? Is there another resource you can direct me to for this product in the US? Thanks much
Answer: For hardwood flooring you want something without so much give. All the wool cushion we sell (for carpet) is more than 1/8" thick and this amount of give will put a strain on all the joins of your hardwood floor. Meaning the only way to install it for hardwood would be sandwiched between your subfloor and a layer of 5/8" (or thicker) plywood, then your hardwood flooring on top of the plywood.Cork Underlayment or Quietwalk Plus is a better choice. It is dimensionally more stable, handles moisture, and is a better acoustical blocker and insulator than a thin felt pad would be.
Question: What is the pile height?
Answer: The Catskill is approximately 1/2" high.
Question: Can it be put over radiant heat floors + wall to wall?
Answer: We sell the Catskill line as wall to wall carpet, though you can also order custom sized area rugs as well. Located under the downloads section on the product page is some documentation that you can use carpet over radiant heating, a link to this in included below for your convenience. https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/c...
Question: I ordered samples and love this carpet. When I showed my installer he said it would not work on stairs (I think he said it was due to the thick backing). Can this be installed on stairs? Is there any special consideration for stair application? I can find another installer if needed. Thanks!
Answer: It's not clear why you were told otherwise as it is used all the time. Our carpet installer was in our showroom and I asked him the same question and he looked at it, felt it and said there would be no problem installing it on stairs.
Question: Can this carpet be cut? My room is 11 feet 6 inches long, and 10 feet wide. I want to order the 10 x 12 size carpet, but I will have to cut 6 inches off the length, and want to make sure I can do this without damaging the carpet.
Answer: When you order a finished area rug, it comes serged. If you cut part of it off, you will cut off the nicely serged edge and leave a raw edge. If you are wanting a certain size, we suggest you call us at 641-323-6111 and have us get a custom rug quote from Earth Weave for you.
Question: what color would you suggest to best coordinate with slate tile and maple wood trim?
Answer: Your best bet when trying to coordinate colors is to go online and order small samples of the ones you think may work for your situation. Then you'll be able to actually see them in person in your light and find the most glorious option for you.
Question: We have siberian huskies - they shed- A LOT - will a suction only vacuum get up the fur really????
Answer: We don't sell vacuum cleaners, so we can't speak with authority about whether a suction only vacuum will work versus your Huskies' hair.
Question: What kind and thickness of cushion do you recommend for this carpet?
Answer: Unique Carpets recommends the use of a pad of bonded urethane (re-bond) either 3/8" or 7/16" thick and a minimum of 8 lb. density. As an alternative, we offer 100% wool pads from J Mish as well as synthetic rubber pad made by Sponge Cushion Inc. - both of which are much longer lasting and produce no hazardous air pollutants. Samples are available on our website to get a feel for softness and composition.
Question: Where are you located? I need to visit a showroom in 2 months where can I find one?
Answer: Our one showroom is in Fairfield Iowa, but we ship product and samples nationwide.
Question: Is padding required or can wool carpet be lauded directly on a cement slab? If not, what would be the best choice for padding?
Answer: Pad is necessary in for maximum carpet performance. J Mish makes excellent padding; Natural Performance Wool Cushion. A good carpet cushion can add to the useful life of a carpet. It can also improve the acoustical and thermal properties and reduce the overall maintenance costs.
Question: Can you tell me if the Nature's Carpet, Nature's Felt Underlayment pad (wool) has been treated with Permethrin or any other type of moth resistant agent?
Answer: Nature's Felt is completely chemically free, that means no Permethrin and no other treatments which is the same as their carpet.
Question: Can one use the Roomba vacuums on this/wool carpeting?
Answer: Unfortunately no because they will chew up the fibers. All of our wool carpet manufacturers require regular vacuuming with a suction type vacuum or with one that can raise the beater bar above the fibers. Dysons are prohibited by every wool manufacturer.
Question: Can this underlay rug pad be used between tinted polyurethaned concrete and area rug without discoloring concrete ?
Answer: It is completely chemical and dye free, so there's no known reason it would discolor. However, keep in mind that this product is meant to go under wall to wall carpet so it has zero slip resistance.
Question: Vacuum recommendation?
Answer: Use vacuums that have no beater bar or allow you to raise it above the surface. Almost all wool carpet manufacturers do not recommend Dyson brand vacuums.
Question: Does someone come to measure and install Berber carpet?
Answer: You'll need to find a local carpet installer to help you measure and install your carpet. We will ship to your home or to their warehouse. We recommend that you check with local hardware stores for names that often are posted on bulletin boards or check this website: cfiinstallers.org. It's a national information base for certified carpet and flooring installers.
Question: Can this carpet be cut and made as a bounded area rug (12 x 14) with a thick pad beneath it, but not installed wall to wall?
Answer: Yes, all of Unique's wall to wall carpet can be made into bound area rugs. Please call 800-405-0222 and speak with an eco-advisor who will help you with all the details. Lead time is about four weeks.
Question: Hi there, I'd like a softer feel under foot and would like to use two layers of carpet padding because of the hard concrete floors. Would either this Nature's Carpet or the Earth Weave equivalent allow two layers one on top of each other without any thing to attach both layers? From bottom to top: concrete, two layers of carpet padding, then the carpet. Also, would a moisture barrier be needed if laid on top of concrete on the ground level of a single storey house without a basement? Thanks for taking time to consider my questions.
Answer: Yes, either brand of padding should work but you will need to attach them in some way so they don't bunch up by first sewing them together or using safety pins.
Question: Do you sell rug runners ?
Answer: It is possible to order custom sizes of area rugs, however, it is more often than not, not financially reasonable to order such. You would pay for for all of excess material that was cut off the roll to make your carpet. For example if your runner is for a 3' wide x 15' long and the carpet comes 12'wide, you'll still pay for all 12' wide of the material even though you only need 3' wide.
Question: I want to know why my question was removed?? I asked how the padding is sold and how the padding would be cut to install and how the landings would be cut
Answer: Carpet pad is sold in full rolls so the installer would cut it to fit your stairs and landings. We carry three brands, each one offered in a different size so that you can get the one closest to your project needs. The roll size of the Nature's Carpet Pad is 184.5 square feet, the Earth Weave Enertia pad is 225 square feet and the J Mish Natural Performance Wool Cushion is 135 square feet.
Question: I am having carpeting on the stairs with two landings. How is the padding sold. Does it have to be cut by the installer to fit the amount of padding needed for each stair and the landings?
Answer: Carpet pad is sold in full rolls so the installer would cut it to fit your stairs and landings. We carry three brands, all of which are almost identical except for the roll sizes. The Nature's Carpet Pad is 184.5 square feet, the Earth Weave Enertia pad is 225 square feet and the J Mish Natural Performance Wool Cushion is 135 square feet. The first two must ship via freight and will be more expensive to ship than the J Mish which is small enough to ship via UPS ground.
Question: Will using a Dyson vacuum hurt this carpet? How about a roomba?
Answer: The most important maintenance step is proper vacuuming. Regular and thorough vacuuming at least once a week and more often in heavy traffic areas will remove soil and dirt particles before they become embedded into the pile of the carpet. An upright Vacuum cleaner with rotating beater bar and brush or canister type with a powerhead are the most efficient cleaners. The head of the vacuum cleaner must be adjusted so that the brushes barely touch the surface of the carpet. The easiest way to do this is to place a sheet of paper under the vacuum and adjust it until you hear the beater bar hitting the paper. If your vacuum cleaner beater bar cannot be adjusted, DO NOT use it on your carpet. A suction style vacuum cleaner would be a better option.DO NOT use a self-adjusting vacuum since they adjust too deeply into the pile and will cause excessive fuzzing. DO NOT use an overly stiff brush on the beater bar since this too will cause excessive fuzzing. DO NOT use any vacuum made by Oreck or Dyson as these will cause excessive fuzzing. It is important to remember to move the vacuum cleaner slowly to allow time to remove soil, and above all, make sure that the dust bag is never more than half full. Remember you cannot over vacuum, but, when vacuuming an area rug, make sure you do not vacuum over the edges as this will encourage fraying. Keep the vacuum on the flat surface of the rug.
Question: 45 years ago in our first house there were wool rugs. The rugs had moths. How can you protect the carpet from natural pests?
Answer: There is only one good way to protect wool carpet or area rugs from moths and that is to vacuum regularly, especially in the Spring and Fall when the moths lay their eggs. That's because it's the larva that eats wool and moths typically only lay their eggs in dark less traveled areas such as underneath couches or in closets. We know of no safe sprays that will do the job as they are typically pesticides which can rub off on your skin. Not good. Routine vacuuming is the easiest, safest and least expensive way to prevent these pests from eating your carpet.
