If you are looking to stain the surface of your butcher block, this water-based product will work provided the surface is porous and not previously sealed. It will not protect the surface from food as it is simply a pigmented stain. Unfortunately, adding an oil sealer over the surface of this will probably change the color. If you plan on cutting on this butcher block, we recommend our food grade oils such as Bioshield Herbal Oil or AFM Safecoat Naturals Penetrating Oil. We recommend testing these first before applying over the entire surface. If you will NOT be cutting on the butcher block, and you just want a clear topical coating that is easy to wipe off, we would recommend using Bioshield's AquaResin Floor Finish or AFM Safecoat Polyureseal BP which are both non-toxic polyurethanes. These are not edible and therefore do not recommend cutting on them. However, they do provide a nice hard coating that will hold up for many years.
