It depends on what you wish to accomplish. This is a penetrating water proofer product which will only work on raw wood and will make water bead on the chest, as opposed to soaking in. It has no top coat finish, so the chest will continue to look like raw wood. It also has no UV protection, so if the chest is outside or exposed to sunlight, the wood will gray and age. If you wanted a product to make the cedar chest easier to clean, add a bit of color/surface sheen, or seal in off gassing, or cover an existing paint or sealer, we carry different products for that.
