For the exterior of the raised garden beds, we recommend the Vermont Natural Coatings PolyWhey as it is both a penetrating water proofer and creates a durable coating on the surface. It is a stain and sealer all in one. For the interior of the bed, the part covered by soil, we recommend the AFM SafeCoat Dynoseal. It is a waterproofing membrane that prevents moisture intrusion from the soil into the wood and stops leaching of the cedar tannins into the soil. This has become a very popular product for raised garden beds. The Vermont Natural Coatings waterproofer is for raw, untreated lumber only. It provides no UV protection or topcoat finish, so we would not recommend it for this application.
