We recently bought a house with a wood front gate. It appears to be quarter sawn yellow pine. Whatever was used as the initial stain is now flaking off. You can rub your hand across the surface and it comes off down to the bare wood. This is the side of the gate that gets the afternoon sun. From what I have read, the PolyWhey Penetrating Exterior Stain seems to be the best choice. I have a couple of questions though. Will this stain work as stated on yellow pine? Can the stains be tinted as the Acorn Brown is not dark enough? Is there a darker color?

Vermont Natural Coatings Polywhey will work fine on any wood surface as long as it is clean, dry, porous and free of existing finishes. That means, you may have to lightly sand it first to open the pores. If you prefer a darker stain, immediately apply a third coat before the second has dried. The wood may not take the extra coat but you can try. Acorn Brown is the darkest color. You may also wish to consider our Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Oil which is a penetrating oil and stain all in one. They offer many more colors that may suit your needs. In general darker colors have more pigment which blocks UV better and delivers a longer lasting finish.
