A surface that is stained and varnished is challenging to paint over because the surface is hard to adhere to. Generally it is recommended to rough up the surface with 100 to 120 grit sandpaper first, and then apply a primer before applying two top coats of semi-gloss paint. You probably don't need to sand everything off if this is done properly. Attached are examples our ECOS non-toxic primer and paint.
