The wood primer is formulated to go over raw wood only. If your desk has been painted with water-based paint, we would recommend you use the ECOS Universal Primer instead. And then you can follow that with the application of the ECOS Interior/Exterior paint. If your desk is covered with oil-based paint, or you are uncertain what the previous paint used on the desk was, we would recommend you use the AFM Safecoat Transitional Primer instead. This is the only primer we carry that is formulated to go over oil-based paint. You could then follow that up with AFM SafeCoat Zero VOC Paint. For best results, we always recommend you prime your painting surface with primer first. If your desk is coated with a semi gloss or gloss paint, as a first step, you need to degloss the desk first (lightly sand to get rid of the gloss appearance) - to create a surface with teeth that your primer will be able to grip to.
