Cork is naturally antimicrobial and won't mold due to the millions of cells in a honeycomb -like structure containing suberin which is a gas that is not-toxic to humans. This prevents moisture from getting into the cork. The cork in wine bottles is natural cork and is not sealed or protected with any synthetic or natural sealers. It lasts for decades without molding. Completely waterproof and food safe. Cork is used as insulation and even as cladding on the outside of buildings in Europe. Google it.
