I need to stain joists that I will be using to rebuild part of my deck. The boards are pressure-treated 6X10s that have been cut into four-foot lengths. All the info I can find online about preparing lumber so that stain will adhere to it recommends toxic products. Everything I read says that if you don't prepare the boards the stain won't adhere. That is a particular problem since I live at 9,000 feet in Colorado where we have bitter, snowy winters. Is there something you have that I can use to prepare pressure-treated boards for staining that does not contain toxic chemicals?

We have stains and finishes that can be used on pressure-treated wood (Rubio Hybrid Oil and Vermont Natural Coatings PolyWhey Exterior Stain) but only after the wood has been weathering for a year outside and has released its treatment. Both require a clean, dry surface free of oils, waxes or other sealants. Both will wear for many years, especially underneath a deck where there is little UV rays from the sun. Samples are available on our website and we highly recommend testing on a small area to confirm color and proper adhesion.
