Bioshield Wood Counter Finish would be a better product for this purpose. We also have other oils which will do the same job. (Bioshield Hard OIl #9, AFM Naturals Clear Penetrating Oil, Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C--all will work in the same way. None is any better than the other.) However, the key is in how you apply it. We recommend lightly sanding first with up to #100 or #120 grit sandpaper to open the pores. You may have to start with a coarser grit if you are removing a polyurethane finish. Then apply one coat with a brush and allow to saturate. Once absorbed which could take 30-60 minutes, apply a second coat. Allow to soak in for a few hours and then wipe off any excess with a dry cloth. Then use a soft nylon buffing pad by hand or attached to a cordless drill and buff the surface. You may also use a 250-350 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper to burnish the oil until is is super smooth. This process will force the oil and sawdust into the grain more deeply and will create a tighter seal. (Caution: oily cloths can self combust. When finished, wet the cloth and conceal in a glass jar, then toss. Or lay flat outside in the yard to dry.)
