This penetrating product can only go over raw/unfinished wood. So if your deck is dirty, or new, or sealed with something else, or has been recently pressure treated, or still has mill glaze on it you will need to remove that via scrubbing or sanding before applying the waterproofer. All this is presented in the directions for application (in the downloads section of the product detail page, direct link below for your convenience)It is perhaps noting that this waterproofer is great at doing one thing, waterproofing. It does nothing for protecting an exterior wood surface from abrasion or uv rays, your wood is going to act like there is nothing on it, and will age and grey naturally. The only difference will be that when water falls on the wood, it will bead on the surface rather than soaking in. If you want a product that will protect against UV rays and provide water resistance we would recommend an exterior stain instead, the darker the pigment, the more protection against the sun.https://www.greenbuildingsupply.com/core/media/media.nl?id=914045&c=772072&h=82
