Vermont Natural Coatings Exterior Penetrating Water Proofer is an exterior grade product that will ONLY work on raw (unfinished/uncoated/unstained) wood and can not be coated with anything afterward as it makes the wood waterproof (and thusly additional coats will not be able to bond with the surface). It also has zero abrasion resistance so we would not recommend this for countertops. Depending on the type of stain you are planning on using, and how you plan to use your countertops we have a couple of options that may work. If you are using an oil-based stain and want a food-grade sealer, we would recommend AFM Natural Penetrating Oil. If you are using a water-based stain and do not mind if your countertops are sealed with a non-food grade (but otherwise healthy and non-toxic) sealer we would recommend AFM Safecoat Polyureseal BP. If you go with one of these options, it's important that you do not cut food directly on the countertop (use a cutting board), use trivets for hot items, wipe up food spills and oils quickly, and clean with a mild cleaner.
