The thickness and density of a floating click-style floor is what determines how much sound is transferred by it. Most vinyl and laminate style floors are only 1/4" thick, very dense and act much like a drum skin to vibrate sound waves. Marmoleum Click Cinch Loc is 3/8" thick and comprised of three layers: a high density fiberboard core, a porous cork backing and a resilient surface layer of natural linoleum . The combination of these three different soft and hard densities causes constructive interference of the sound waves and makes for a quieter floor. It's certainly not as quiet as carpet or cork but is a not like laminate or vinyl either.Aside from the materials used to construct the floor, other factors can and do accentuate sound waves such as: the types of shoes you wear, the amount of absorption from the surrounding walls, furniture and ceilings, the height of your ceilings and the type of subfloor such as concrete vs. plywood. These additional factors should not be underestimated as they help transmit or diminish sound waves too.
