Thinking of using Rubio Monocoat on raw ponderosa pine. I need to stain to match Knotty Alder doors that I finished with the penetrating oil with wax. Turned out beautiful but darker than expected. Does the pine need to be pre conditioned to control the grain and which color would best match?

Some pine may need to be pre-conditioned but we have no way to knowing whether your Ponderosa Pine needs it in order to control the grain and color. This is an art project that requires testing. That's the only way to know for sure. Usually conditioners even out the appearance if there is excessive pitch or tannins that obscure the grain in some way. Try a small sample first to see. There are 45 colors. You may not need any conditioning.
