Can I use Vermont Ext Penetrating or AFM Polyureseal Ext (or a different product) to seal and protect birch wood veneer tables with an existing acrylic lacquer finish? If so, will it take after a light sanding or does the existing acrylic lacquer need to be fully sanded off (or stripped?). These are indoor tables I want to make into outdoor tables with weather resistance. Thanks!

Vermont's PolyWhey product is a penetrating sealer. That means it must soak into the surface. All existing sealers/finishes must be worn off or sanded off before application. When sanding a veneered wood you must be careful not to sand with too coarse of a grit as it will go below the veneer. Another option would be to use our AFM Polyureseal EXT directly over the lacquer finish. This will require a test first to make sure it is compatible with your existing lacquer. It will probably require a light sanding to de-gloss the finish and provide some tooth. Test samples are available for all of our products and are highly recommended.
