I have a top of a drafting table I would like to protect and the normal sheets I can purchase are usually green or gray. I was wondering if I could glue this on top of the desk instead and just cut to size. The dimension of my desktop are 72' by 38'. Im considering the Forbo Marmoleum Striato - Sheet in compressed time. Could I order just what I needed? Since it is 79' wide just order a 40' cut? If so, what direction would the lines be running?

That is an interesting outside the box idea. Marmoleum sheeting must be ordered in square yards (SF x 9) and for 72" x 38" you will need to order 3 square yards or 79" x 49". The Striato series has a linear appearance that runs lengthwise. We recommend ordering a sample first to make sure you like the color and feel of this product. You may also consider our Furniture Linoleum products, also from Forbo, which were designed with desk and table tops in mind (samples are available for this as well). For table or countertop applications, Forbo requires the use of L910W adhesive. One gallon will be enough.
