In the install instructions it says it can be cut with any kind of saw. One of the photos shows a box cutter and in the answer section of someone else's question someone mentioned install can be done without a saw at all. So does it need a saw or not? Can cuts be made cleanly by scoring and snapping? what about lengthwise cuts that could be as much as 48" long?

All you need is a box knife to score and snap. You do not need a saw. Same answer for lengthwise cuts. It's very easy and it snaps clean.
