I got samples of the Natural and Teak. Looking for something that would give UV protection but also keep the cedar outdoor furniture looking close to the way cedar looks naturally. Do you think the Natural, being fairly light, gives enough UV protection? Or should we try mixing another shade in? I would assume the darker the shade, the more protection. But, is the Natural enough protection to last say for a year? The Vermont Natural cedar stain has too much orange tone for our taste. It would be great if their company developed more colors. This furniture is in shade a good bit and sun during varying parts of the day.

You are correct that the more pigment in the stain, the darker the color and the better the protection from UV rays and graying. The amount of time the stain lasts is entirely dependent at the direction and intensity of the sunlight on the wood as well as the amount of other environmental conditions. Finishes applied to Northern and Eastern sides of a building usually will last significantly longer than Southern and Western unless they are covered by awnings or trees. You can mix the oils but you are on your own regarding the outcome. Samples are available on our website for you to experiment with.Vermont Natural Coatings has developed more colors and we expect them to be available by the Fall.
