Sealing exterior wooden furniture, it depends on what your end goal is. Do you want to protect the wood from water? Or UV rays? Or coat the wood to provide abrasion resistance? Or all of the above? The water proofer from Vermont is ONLY a water proofer. If you use this product, the wood will be waterproofed, water will bead on the surface rather than soaking in, but the wood will grey and age like uncoated wood because there is absolutely zero UV protection and zero abrasion resistance in this product. It also cannot be used in conjunction with any other products. The strongest protection for your chair would be Exterior Satin Paint, with the obvious downside is it will cover the look of wood. Second best would be a sealing stain. The pigment on an exterior grade stain will protect your wood from UV Rays, and these stains do offer protection against water. We carry the oil-based Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Exterior Wood Protector or water-based Vermont Natural Coatings PolyWhey Exterior Penetrating Stain. The darker the stain, the stronger the UV protection. Third best would be a clear coat sealer, like AFM Safecoat EXT Exterior Polyureseal Clear. A lot of abrasion resistance and protection from the elements, and a little UV protection.
