The Vermont Natural Coatings PolyWhey Penetrating Wood Stain is often used for raised garden beds on the top and outside of the planter box. It's a non-toxic product, however, it does not have a food grade certification that requires it to be edible. For the inside of the garden bed beneath the soil, we recommend AFM SafeCoat DynoSeal which is a below grade waterproofing membrane for foundation walls and will not allow tannins to leech into the soil. It will also not allow the soil to degrade the wood. It applies with a roller or brush just like paint with two coats.
