Provided you understand this is a water proofer product, commonly used for exterior application (such as fences) - the only thing it does is it waterproofs raw wood. As this is a penetrating product there is no abrasion resistance and no encapsulation per say ... sure you can use it on your coffee table if you have stripped and sanded off any previously existing finish down to the raw wood. Vermont does not test on animals, but other customers have used this non-toxic water proofer for birdhouses and beehives and reported no ill effects on the wildlife. If you wanted something heartier to protect your coffee table, we would recommend AFM Safecoat Acrylacq or Polyureseal BP, both are also non toxic and are topical (rather than penetrating) and will encapsulate chemicals such as formaldehyde. For a subtle look, we would recommend the matte sheen.Samples are available for all these products for testing purposes.
