Q1: We want to use the VNC Penetrating stain for our fence. We have way too much fence to try and sand. Is pressure washing with a 3400 psi washer and the 30 degree tip as effective as sanding to clean the wood and open it up to receive the penetrating stain?Q2: Based on what I have seen on our deck which was previously improperly stained. It looks like the pressure washer would be as effective if not more effective than sanding to remove the old stain, Would you agree?

Power washing is an inexpensive and efficient way to clean and prep for a new coat of stain but power washers are extremely powerful and if not used correctly, can easily damage soft boards. Be careful to use a low pressure from a distance, and not stay in the same spot for too long to avoid damage to the wood fibers. If you see the wood fibers start to lift, back off. Its also best to start power washing in an inconspicuous spot. Regarding your deck, if it's older, you might have noticed that your wood has started to crack and splinter. In order to remedy this problem, the best solution is to power sand the boards to bring them back to a new, smooth surface before applying the stain.
