Provided the original paint is still in good shape (not peeling away from the door) and is not a gloss or semi-gloss paint, you can just go over that painted surface with AFM Safecoat Transitional Primer and, once that is dry, overcoat with AFM Exterior Satin. If the paint is peeling, you would need to (bare minimum) scrape off the loose paint. If the old paint is semi-gloss or gloss sheen, you would need to lightly sand/degloss the entire surface before priming. (the deglossing creates a surface that the primer can grip onto). If you suspect that the door was painted with a lead-based paint, DO take special care with sanding and removal. We would advise testing or professional remediation if this turns out to be the case.
