Safe, durable polyurethane with ultra low odor and easy application
Made in Vermont, this water-based polyurethane for hardwood flooring provides a durable, non-toxic finish that is long lasting and easy to apply. PolyWhey Floor Finish is a high-performance sealer for new or old wood flooring, trim, stairs, furniture and all millwork.
Vermont Natural Coatings (VNC) PolyWhey® Floor Finish can be applied over freshly sanded wood, fully cured paint, as well as water-based finishes. It may be applied over some oil-based finishes if fully cured. Testing is always advised. It provides excellent moisture, chemical and abrasion resistance. It dries very quickly and creates a clear finish that enhances wood grain without yellowing. Recommended three coats of finish. Formulated for foot traffic to resist scuff and black heel marks.
Our special inflation-busting price is far below our other low VOC polyurethanes and with better coverage (500-600 SF vs. 350-450 SF) means a better value for your dollar. Eager to test? Purchase an 8-ounce sample to see if this is the right product for your project.
PolyWhey® was developed as a binding agent by the University of Vermont scientists to create environmentally responsible finishes that reduce our carbon footprint. The whey is a natural by-product of the cheese-making process used by Vermont farmers. PolyWhey® is a USDA Certified Biobased Preferred® Product. By using recycled whey protein, Vermont Natural Coatings eliminates the need for heavy metal driers, toxic co-binders and carcinogenic solvents typically found in wood finishes. It contains no formaldehyde and surpasses every national, regional, state and county air quality regulation.
VNC utilizes this PolyWhey® technology in conjunction with Decovery®, a plant based resin that offers the durability of oil-based finishes and the advantage of waterborne finishes with none of the disadvantages of either. The resistance to abrasion and moisture of a wood finish is based on the strength of its cross linkers. Polymerized whey protein provides a much stronger cross linking than other wood finishes. VNC PolyWhey® Floor Finish utilizes these natural bio-based proteins and resins instead of toxic chemicals found in traditional wood finishes. The result is a longer lasting, beautiful finish that is safe for people, pets and the environment.
Why We Like It
VNC's PolyWhey polyurethane performs as good as our other polyurethanes with an ultra-low odor. It's added benefits are that it can be applied over oil-based stains and finishes, dries very quickly, covers 500-600 SF and costs much less. There are very few USDA Biobased Preferred renewable finishes on the market and in an industry where toxins are the norm, Vermont Natural Coatings has found a 'Safer Whey.'

2. Test the finish on a sample piece of wood to confirm compatibility and desired appearance. For best results apply in temps between 65F-80F with a relative humidity of 40%-60%. Avoid applying in direct sunlight. Three coats are recommended for optimum product performance. ------** If applying to previously finished wood, sand the surface to remove old coatings before applying new finish. If sanding the entire surface is not desired, sand areas of distress that can cause flaking. This allows blending of edges. Vacuum dust and wipe with a water-dampened cloth. **------
3. Apply thin, even coats taking care to prevent the finish from forming puddles. Overlap strokes and always maintain a wet edge. Finish will dry in two hours under normal conditions. High humidity or low temperature may lengthen dry time.
4. Sand lightly after first coat with very fine sandpaper (220 grit or finer).
5. Vacuum dust and wipe with a water-dampened cloth and Vermont Natural Coatings Wood Cleaner. Never use steel wool or a tack cloth.
6. Apply second coat. 7. After second coat, sand only if 24 hours have passed since the previous coat was applied. Sanding, vacuuming, and cleaning between coats will aid adhesion and create a smoother surface.
Application over oil finishes: Wait at least 7 Days after applying Natural oil based stain (ex. Rubio Monocoat) for best adhesion and Color. Then clean with Degreaser and abrade with a maroon buffer pad. Apply PolyWhey Topcoat.
Can walk on in socks after 4 hours. Wait 7 days before light traffic and 14 days for heavy traffic and large pets on floor.
